Die Casting Defects - Inclusions, Leakers and Cracks

Inclusions are mainly a problem in aluminum but they also occur in zinc and magnesium. In magnesium, you're going to be worried about magnesium oxide. You're going to be worried about foreign materials also because you are going to be dealing with high temperature. And then any one of these, you're not using iron pots for zinc if you're using refractory pots. And you are using refractory for magnesium and potentially any refractory material can get in there. Inclusions can cause problems with strength. They become extremely hard spots in the casting matrix in any one of the alloys. They are potentially going to upset your flow. So if you get large inclusions, large pieces of material, they can actually come through the gate or combine in the casting and obstruct the flow. You can have porosity concerns or other flow issues due to inclusions in the metal. The most prevalent inclusion that is out there is iron. The oxides in the metal.
