Metalcasting Foundry Environmental Resources

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on May 16, 2017 3:13:12 PM

(This week we would like to share the metalcasting foundry environmental resources available from the American Foundry Society (AFS) to help you be in compliance with governmental regulations from OSHA and EPA.)

The American Foundry Society (AFS) has the technical personnel to help you be in compliance with governmental regulations from OSHA and EPA. The society offers confidentiality, experience, professional services and in-plant environmental assistance whether you need an on-site consultation or just some answers. AFS fosters environmental protection through industry participation in its Environmental, Health and Safety Division 10 Committees.

Division 10 Environmental Health & Safety

This division contains three standing committees plus an exec/programming group. The committees meet independently, but all EHS meetings take place during the same few days and there is considerable overlap in committee personnel.

Executive/Program Group
Organizes, administers and implements the necessary committees with the technical and scientific disciplines required to advance responsible health, safety and environmental control programs and standards in the foundry industry. Responsible for the preparation of the technical program of the EHS division for the annual meeting of the Society. Secures papers and speakers with the responsibility for review and acceptance.

Air Quality Committee 10-E
Compiles and develops technical data for the most efficient methods of controlling air contaminant emissions from within the workplace and ambient air from the plant. Reviews the new issues and regulations as they affect air quality emissions in the metal-casting industry. Recommends and supervises research projects. Issues technical information and advisories on air quality matters.

Water Quality & Waste Disposal Committee 10-F
Studies proposed and current laws, rules and regulations affecting effluent water quality, waste management and the most cost-effective means of compliance. Guides research in solid waste management. Interprets guidelines for foundry operators in disposing of their solid wastes in an environmentally sound manner. Compiles and disseminates technical and regulatory information to members.

Safety & Health Committee 10-Q
Develops standards of practice. Reviews and conducts research on new and existing operations/processes to improve foundry employee safety and health protection. Assists foundries in meeting their obligation to provide a workplace free of recognized safety and health hazards. Represents the foundry industry in regulatory proceedings to develop safety and health standards.

Hill and Griffith Company at the 2017 Metalcasting Congress Show

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on May 3, 2017 10:06:06 AM

It was a very successful 2017 Metalcasting Congress show according to the traffic at our booth and many of the attendees.

Joe Murphy, sales representative for MODERN CASTING Magazine said, "It was good seeing you at Metalcasting Congress. Having personally visited over 70 exhibitors, by nearly all accounts it was a terrific, upbeat, positive and very productive show for many. (As I shared with you, one supplier has now gone to a second shift and moved to a larger facility to keep up with the demand of "more back orders than they've ever had in the company's history." This is a direct verbatim quote.)

Shown in the photo are left to right: Barry Morgan, Tom Dempsy and John Shindler.

Metalcasting Congress Registration Open; Reshoring Initiative Founder Harry Moser To Keynote Congress April 25

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Mar 14, 2017 4:39:32 PM

From the Amercian Foundry Society's website. Published February 6, 2017.

The American Foundry Society (AFS) announced today that Reshoring Initiative® founder Harry Moser will deliver the Keynote Address at the Metalcasting Congress on April 25 in Milwaukee.

“Harry Moser’s visionary work has not only helped many companies document the economic advantages of reshoring, but also led to his induction into the Industry Week Manufacturing Hall of Fame,” said Doug Kurkul, the CEO of AFS.

The mission of the Reshoring Initiative is to bring back good, well-paying manufacturing jobs by assisting companies to more accurately assess the total cost of offshoring. The Initiative helps companies shift their collective thinking from “offshoring is cheaper” to “local production reduces the total cost of ownership.”

“Metalcasting is an exceptionally important industry,” said Moser. “I worked for six years for DISAMATIC U.S., and my father ran the foundry at Singer Sewing Machine’s main plant in New Jersey, so I am quite familiar with the metalcasting industry.”

Non-wetting Insulating Coating for Green Sand and all Metalcasting applications

DESCRIPTION:

When applied as a coating to ladles, runners, metalworking tools, pyrometer tubes, etc. POT AND LADLE COATING acts as a non-wetting insulating coating allowing liquid metal to roll off. This prevents tool attack by liquid metal and extends the life of the coated articles. It works well with zinc, lead, aluminum, and copper-base alloys.

2017 Metalcasting Outlook, FOUNDRY Magazine Report Review

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Feb 21, 2017 3:55:00 PM

(This week's post is a review of FOUNDRY MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY Magazines' 2017 Metalcasting Outlook. You need to register to read the full report, "2017 Metalcasting Outlook.")

A complex industry like metalcasting never matches overall business trends. It has its own operating rules, its own advantages, and its own vulnerabilities that confound the perspective of finance-based analysis.

Each year, during September and October, FM&T surveys metalcasters to measure the outlook of men and women responsible North America’s foundries and diecasting plants. We seek to identify the problems they face in their businesses and the economy, to learn what plans they're making for the coming business cycle, and to understand better they're expectations for the year ahead.

We surveyed readers by email over a period of six weeks, with a detailed study that focuses on the metalcasting business, its risks and prospects, and the internal and external factors shaping its progress. Their perspective — presented here — is valuable not only because of their insights and advantages, but because they occupy positions that are critical to the prospects of so many other elements of the global industrial economy.
