Increase Productivity and Profitability by Understanding Thermal Control

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Wed, Dec 09, 2015 @ 12:00 PM

(Reposted from the North American Die Casters Association Newsletter, thanks!)

NADCA_Masthead_600.jpg

The die casting process requires efficient heat removal from the solidifying metal. Faster heat removal means shorter cycle time thus higher productivity and profitability. Ideally, heat should be removed primarily by internal cooling lines.  However, spraying is widely practiced in die casting as a complementary method of removing heat.  This two part webinar will review the heat transfer mechanisms of for these cooling methods, and the respective design principles used in die casting. The impact of the cooling method on die life and casting quality will also be discussed.

Part 2 - Thermal Control in Die Casting:Spraying - Spraying is widely used to complement removal of heat by cooling lines.  While an important factor in thermal control, it also plays a role in casting release and preventing soldering.  This webinar will review the heat transfer mechanism and principles of spray cooling.  It will discuss briefly other roles of spraying and how it affects the process and part integrity.

Hill and Griffith Presented OCMA Annual President’s Award for "Supplier of the Year 2015"

Posted by Myke Amend on Tue, Aug 11, 2015 @ 11:45 AM

At the July 28th annual meeting of the OCMA, outgoing OCMA President Tony Zalar, Babcock & Wilcox Company, presented the “Company of the Year” award to Dave & Steve Yonto, The Quality Castings Company and the “Supplier of the Year” award to David Greek Jr., representing Hill & Griffith Company. The awards, established twenty-one years ago in 1994, recognize the value to OCMA of contributions made by its member companies and the individuals who give their valuable time to advance not only the OCMA, but also more importantly, the metal casting industry in Ohio.

Hill and Griffith receives award from OCMA for Supplier of the Year
OCMA President Tony Zalar, Babcock & Wilcox Company, presents the Supplier of the Year Award 2015 to David Greek Jr. and Dale Welsh, Hill & Griffith Company.
A key factor in selecting The Quality Castings Company this year as in previous years was the welcoming of OCMA members to the annual foundry tour held on Tuesday, May 12, 2015. The tour was one of the most popular in recent memory with nearly seventy (70) members taking advantage of the opportunity to see the foundry in operation. Since the last OCMA tour of The Quality Casting Company facility nearly a decade ago, the company has invested more than $10 million in its operations.

A major improvement included the purchase of a contiguous site where a new building contains a state-of-the-art cleaning room as well as shipping and receiving and pattern storage operations. The Quality Castings Company contributes to OCMA in many other ways. OCMA Past President Dave Yonto has agreed to once again serve on the Board of Trustees during this time of transition to a new executive director. The company has been a long-time major sponsor of the annual OCMA golf outing. For hosting the annual foundry tour and for providing long-time support of the OCMA, The Quality Castings Company was presented “Foundry of the Year 2015”.

The supplier of the year award was presented to The Hill and Griffith Company for their long-time membership and support of OCMA activities. David Greek Jr., President, has served as OCMA Golf Committee Chair as the outing has achieved year after year of record profits.

Dale Welsh, VP-Finance, has volunteered to audit the monthly financial reports prepared by Executive Director Russ Murray, to attend the Board of Trustee meetings, and to assist with other financial matters. Hill & Griffith Company has generously contributed to the OCMA annual golf outing with two major sponsorships as well as fielding a highly competitive foursome. In recognition of these contributions Hill & Griffith Company was awarded the “Supplier of the Year 2015”.

Submit Your Entry to the International Die Casting Design Competition

To be a winner in today’s economy, you must meet and even exceed expectations. In a competitive global market, customers take notice of the best. NADCA knows that competition improves the competitor. With its annual Die Casting Competition, it recognizes and rewards the outstanding casting designs of the year. Entering and winning is one of the best ways to gain visibility with leading decision-makers. The competition is open to aluminum, magnesium, zinc die castings and other alloy families. Any number of castings may be entered. However, a separate entry form is required for each casting or assembly of castings. In addition, the metal surface cannot be improved or concealed by tumbling, shot blasting, coating or other surface treatments.

Judging is conducted by an independent panel of experts from the die casting industry, with no ties to eligible companies. The four equally weighed criteria are ingenuity of casting/product design; overall quality; cost savings; and market-expanding potential. Winning castings will be displayed during the 2015 Die Casting Congress & Exposition in Indianapolis, IN and winners will be honored during the Die Casting Awards Luncheon. NADCA’s Die Casting Engineer Magazine, NADCA’s Website and the NADCA Design Website will also feature the winning castings. This competition helps promote increased use of die castings by recognizing and publicizing outstanding designs. For more information on the 2015 International Die Casting Design Competition please visit, www.diecasting.org/castings/competition or email Beau Glim at glim@diecasting.org.

The deadline to submit your casting is July 1, 2015. Don’t hesitate!

Light Vehicle Sales Update Means Business for Die Casting Industry

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Wed, Feb 04, 2015 @ 09:28 AM

Thanks to the NADCA Feb. 7, 2015 Newsletter

WardsAuto tracks light-vehicle (LV) deliveries throughout sales reporting day. Monthly year-over-year change represents the change in daily sales rate (DSR). January had 26 selling days this year and 25 in 2014, meaning DSR % change will be smaller than year-over-year comparisons of total sales volumes.

Led by strong gains in truck sales, U.S. automakers sold 1.149 million light vehicles in January, a 9.3% increase in daily sales (over 26 days) compared with year-ago (25 days). The resultant seasonally adjusted annual rate - roughly 16.55 million - was the industry's highest January SAAR since 2006. A 14.4% rise in daily sales of light trucks spurred the industry growth, as car sales rose just 3.7%. Light trucks accounted for 55% of LV sales in January, compared with 52.7% in January 2014. General Motors led all automakers, accounting for 17.7% of the month's LV sales, followed by Ford (15.2%) and Toyota (14.8%). Subaru recorded the largest year-over-year growth with a 28.3% increase in daily sales, while Volvo and Volkswagen registered industry-worst 3.8% DSR declines.

Pace Industries Gives Students Look at Die Casting Industry

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Fri, Nov 07, 2014 @ 12:49 PM

Thanks to the NADCA Nov. 6, 2014 Newsletter

Grant Sloan of Ozarksfirst.com reported that Pace Industries, Harrison, AR, was among the some 1500 companies across the country that hosted high school students earlier this month for National Manufacturing Day. Following the interest of the first Manufacturing Day they opted to host a second one.

"I've always kind of known what the inside of the factory was like, but this was a much better description," says Yellville Junior, Lexii Knox.

The technology-based equipment used in Pace’s die casting facility is something sales coordinator Chris Barnard says is a perfect fit for the next generation.

"To get new fresh workers in here that are technologically savvy is very important," says Barnard. "It's going to be the turn of the industry."

Pace Industries Die Casting Student Tour 4 resized 600

Roughly 80% of manufacturing companies across the country say they have problems pulling in skilled workers. In Arkansas, manufacturing makes up 90% of the state's exports - which is why Pace is opening its doors to help change some of the misconceptions. While manufacturing pulls in nearly 15 billion dollars a year for the state, Pace Industries is hoping these tours will do more than help grow the industry.

"It's not what it was 25 years ago," says Chris Barnard. "That when you come to manufacturing it's a career, and it's a place for growth, to help out the community and to keep jobs in small towns."
