Precast Solutions: Bourbon, Neat, with a Splash of Precast Concrete

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Oct 26, 2018 12:55:28 PM

Two Kentucky bourbon distilleries look to precast concrete for their building needs.

Precast concrete Rickhouse

Kentucky is known for many things: horse racing, college basketball, Hot Brown sandwiches and bourbon, to name a few.

Driving through Kentucky farmland, it’s easy to spot the distilleries by the distinct buildings used to age bourbon. These rickhouses are essential to producing America’s native spirit, which is unique thanks to the region’s limestone water, corn and new charred oak barrels.

Recently, two bourbon distilleries have moved away from the traditional look and turned to precast concrete for their building projects. Based on their experiences, they are hoping the material is used more across the industry in unique ways.

NPCA extends product-specific certification to water, wastewater tanks

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Oct 18, 2018 12:42:09 PM

The National Precast Concrete Association takes quality control and validation to the next level with a new product-focused certification for water and wastewater tanks.

NPCA Certified Water Tank

Water or wastewater tanks fabricated by Listed Product participants will soon have an additional quality assurance marking to accompany NPCA Certified Plant. Photo and article from Sept. 2018 Concrete Products Magazine.

While its Plant Certification program has traditionally centered on precast concrete production processes candidate operations must abide, the just-launched Optional Product Listing for Water and Wastewater Tanks Program describes specific product models, plus design and performance criteria to obtain certification. Like other association programs, the new offering enlists independent third-party engineering firms accredited to ISO/IEC 17020:2012 for Plant Inspection.

All NPCA Certified Plants can participate in the water and wastewater tank program by completing a detailed submittal package for the model(s) they wish to list. The submittal includes plant information; product description indicating tank capacity and model number; complete set of drawings; plus, reinforcing details and structural calculations. Documents must bear structural or professional engineer stamp. Once the submittal is approved, the plant undergoes an unannounced inspection that includes a watertightness test on a tank chosen at random. The plant will be granted a product listing based on successful test completion. Listed products will appear on the NPCA site, www.precast.org, below the producer name, and with plant product schedule.

Just as Plant Certification enables quality-conscious agencies, engineers and specifiers to identify and select premier precast concrete producers, NPCA notes, the Product Listing Program takes certification one step farther to include specific water or wastewater tank models. Plants displaying the NPCA Certified Plant and NPCA Listed Product markings on their tanks underscore processes complying with industry, design and performance standards. The certification and listing programs reflect NPCA’s commitment to assisting members with maintaining excellence in precast production and operations. By setting one standard of quality, they level the playing field for all producers pursuing market segments or individual contracts.

Additional information on Plant Certification and Listed Products can be obtained from NPCA Director of Certification and Regulator Services Richard Kolewski, 800/366-7731.

Elections, Awards and Plant Tours Top NPCA Convention in Providence

Posted by Hill and Griffith Company on Oct 11, 2018 6:25:34 PM

NPCA members elected a new chairman of the board, honored a longtime Associate member with the industry’s most prestigious award and toured eight precast plants in three states during the association’s annual convention in Providence, R.I., the first week in October.

NPCA Convention, HG

NPCA’s 53rd Annual Convention hosted more than 500 attendees and included the Hill and Griffith Company's display.

Mike Hoffman, vice president of corporate development at Lindsay Precast Inc., headquartered in Canal Fulton, Ohio, was installed as the chairman of the Board for the next 12 months. Hoffman, a 32-year employee at Lindsay Precast, has a long history of leadership on NPCA committees and task groups and has served on the Board of Directors since 2012.

Howard Wingert, president of Concrete Sealants Inc., in Tipp City, Ohio, was honored as the 2018 Robert E. Yoakum recipient. The Yoakum Award, one of the most prestigious honors in the precast concrete industry, is presented annually to an NPCA member for service to the association and the industry. Wingert has contributed much to both NPCA and the industry, serving on the NPCA Board of Directors and many committees, serving on ASTM Committee C13 on Concrete Pipe and ASTM Committee C27 on Precast Concrete Products, which he chaired for more than 10 years.

2017 Yoakum Award Winner Andy Wieser, Wieser Concrete Products (L), presents the 2018 Yoakum Award to Howard Wingert, Concrete Sealants Inc. (R).

The Douglas G. Hoskin Award, NPCA’s top membership development honor, went to Leo Feuerstein, operations manager at Western Precast Concrete in El Paso, Texas. The Hoskin Award is presented to the NPCA member who sponsors the most new members. It was the third Hoskin Award in the last four years for Feuerstein, who sponsored 29 new NPCA members.

The Northeast Precast Concrete Association helped coordinate the full slate of plant tours, which kicked off the Convention with eight plant visits over 1 ½ days to precast facilities in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and New Hampshire. NEPCA, an NPCA affiliate group, also had a strong presence at the event.

More than 500 attended, which makes it the second largest Convention in NPCA’s history, behind only the 2008 event in Hawaii. More than 80 exhibitors filled the Precast Marketplace, which is a record for the annual fall event. The NPCA 54th Annual Convention will be held Oct. 3-5, 2019, in Seattle, Wash.
