The term "Minor Ingredient" does not adequately represent the performance of the materials that are added to a Premix!
Consider the application of Soda Ash (Sodium Carbonite) in Green Sand Foundry Premix Technology. The addition of 0.5% Soda Ash into a Premix will reduce agglomerated sand grains, balance the pH and improve the Bentonites' ability to mull into a Green Sand system. However, the addition of 5.0% Soda Ash will destroy a Green Sand System. Since the addition of 0 to 5.0% of a material into a Premix Formula is considered a "Minor Ingredient", the addition of too much Soda Ash will be catastrophic. Therefore, the term "Minor Ingredient" is truly a mis-representation of the value of the material.
The proper terminology for any material that is added to a Premix in quantities less than 10.0% must be "Value Added Products!" These materials will then get the proper focus at foundry.
