Thermal Control of Die Casting Dies for Optimal Performance
Controlling the temperature of a die casting die through the location of cooling lines is critical to performance and die life. A properly designed system of water and/or oil lines will process heat energy so the die can be operated productively with the highest part quality possible. NADCA has created a three level approach to addressing thermal control. This series is broken down by beginner, intermediate and advanced courses suitable for people with varying levels of knowledge in this area.
Part 1: Simplified Approach to Designing Cooling of Dies – Many people believe that it is very difficult to design the cooling for a die and instead use experience. This first course shows that a good estimate can be made with minimal math. It goes through the way this was developed and then gives examples of designing the cooling for some castings. This is a rapid and reasonably accurate approach for die casters and tool designers with minimal time. Date: June 28, 2017
Part 2: Intermediate Approach to Designing Cooling of Dies – This will look at where the Simplified Approach formulae came from. It will take a more mathematical approach to the problem and include more variables, such as metal temperature. This will also look at more complex parts and work out how you calculate the cooling for castings with complex cores. Date: June 29, 2017
Part 3: Advanced Approach to Designing Cooling of Dies – In this course there are more advanced details on cooling. Namely: -Transient effects due to Thermal Diffusivity -Cooling of runners and biscuit to reduce shrinkage effects -How a fountain/bubbler works -The use of jet cooling and why it works, plus strengths and weaknesses -Oil cooling/heating of dies -Combining oil and water in one die and why we would do this -Changing the heat transfer within a die Date: July 5, 2017
Part 4: Die Spray and Bringing it all Together – This final webinar covers the approach to die spray and how to bring that into the design. It then gives an example where all the facets of the die are brought together as a demonstration. It will give an example that covers general cooling, specific or spot cooling, oil heating, jet cooling and die spray. Date: July 11, 2017
